Standing with bokuto (Rich, l), naginata (Jigme, m) and rokushakubo (Adam, right)

Buki-ho (weapons use method) teaches important concepts (distancing, timing, etc.) through the study of traditional Japanese bladed weapons (first using wooden training swords, progressing to sharp ‘live’ blades) and staves.

Weapons taught in Shoden are Katana (long sword) and Jo (stick) using two-person kata (forms) and drills.

The rest of the curriculum includes– batto (drawing live blades), kodachi (short or companion sword), tanto (dirk), rokushakubo (6 ‘foot’ long staff), hanbo (half-staff), naginata (a glaive-like bladed pole-arm) and yari (spear).

As with all of the curriculum, the goal is to develop strong centered movements.
